Magnets for Happiness: A Historical Interview with Dr. Ralph U. Sierra

By Dr. Irma Sierra

Author’s Note: This article preserves the content and expressions used in an interview conducted with Dr. Ralph U. Sierra during the 1970s. His statements reflect his research, observations, knowledge, and the language used at that time. I subsequently added my own notes and experiences to expand upon the subject. This publication is presented as a historical and educational account of the origins of biomagnetism in our family and in Puerto Rico.

Today, magnets are no longer just for the refrigerator. If you believe they are only used to collect metal filings, make compasses, work with metals, operate motors, or serve as components in electronic accessories, you should know that their potential applications have been studied for decades.

In the interview you are about to read, my father explained that a migraine could be relieved by applying a magnet to the head using its negative charge. He also discussed its application to bone injuries and acute rheumatic pain.

Over the past 50 years, I have had the joy of witnessing the effects of magnets on living organisms, especially through the use of negative polarity. People who use magnetic therapy claim that magnetic fields have beneficial properties for numerous conditions, from arthritis to more complex diseases.

In this episode, I want to share an interview conducted by Alicia Gutiérrez Moreno with my father, Dr. Ralph U. Sierra, a pioneer in the field of biomagnetism in Puerto Rico. After the interview, I continue with my own notes and reflections on this fascinating subject.

FROM BEYOND, FROM HEREAFTER: MAGNETS FOR HAPPINESS

“Every known mass extinction of terrestrial life, from insects to dinosaurs, occurred during periods of geomagnetic reversal. Geomagnetic reversal is an astronomical phenomenon involving a shift in the Earth’s magnetic poles, which are distinct from its geographic poles. When this shift reaches the zero point, the magnetic charge that protects the Earth from the Sun’s harmful rays disappears, exposing its inhabitants to possible total extinction.”

With this explanation, Dr. Ralph Sierra—a researcher of magnet-based therapies—based his work on health, the psychological balance of human beings, and the ecology of nature, drawing upon the discoveries available at that time regarding the importance of magnetism.

Cheerful, friendly, and restless, the Puerto Rican doctor explained that his research began as a result of his own health problem. He suffered from Ménière’s disease, which traditional medicine considered incurable at the time. According to his account, he recovered through the application of electromagnetic therapy.

Dedicated to researching the effects of magnets on health, Dr. Sierra invented numerous devices to locate the biomagnetic poles of the human body and adapted metallic and electric magnets for therapeutic applications.

The inventor was 75 years old but behaved like “a young man of fifty,” as he described himself.

His office looked more like a radio technician’s workshop than a doctor’s office. It did not smell of medicine, alcohol, or acids, but of wires and electrical equipment. That small laboratory frequently received visits from baseball stars whose injuries and fractures he treated with electromagnets.

MAGNETISM AND LIFE

The researcher explained:

“Every injury and almost every disease is influenced by natural or artificial electromagnetic fields. The human being is like a battery, with energy poles and negative and positive currents. When these become imbalanced, disease occurs.

“Furthermore, any living organism deprived for an extended period of a magnetic field equivalent to that of the Earth will first suffer complex illnesses, become filled with anguish and melancholy, and eventually die.”

Dr. Sierra enthusiastically added:

“This overwhelming reality, in which scientists involved in space projects face serious concerns because astronauts are exposed to the effects of the absence of terrestrial magnetism during their flights, has given us the key to the secret of life.

“I believe we are witnessing a new healing power. This represents a remarkable revolution in medicine. The first person to suspect it was Canadian physician Dr. Helen Evans Reid, who took a magnet to bed one night and recovered from severe leg cramps, a chronic condition she had been unable to relieve with any other treatment.

“We already have encouraging results from recent laboratory experiments with animals. Through small electrical charges applied to amputated limbs, those limbs grow back. Powerful magnetic fields can stop the aging process.”

Another example Dr. Sierra cited regarding this revolutionary therapy was the use of negative ionization to strengthen tooth enamel and increase resistance to cavities.

“American Chemway Corporation holds American and European patents for the iontophoretic toothbrush.”

The doctor continued:

“Every second of our lives, when we inhale air through the nose, we recharge our batteries. We do not breathe oxygen alone; that oxygen also carries the negative or positive charges present in the environment.

“It is not surprising that, in yoga practices, when practitioners breathe deeply, they are instructed to direct energy toward a particular point of concentration. This is completely real.

“Although the power of magnetism was once obscured by academic prejudice, today we know that this magnetic energy represents life itself and that it inhabits and governs everything—at least within our terrestrial form of life.

“To speak about the effects of magnetism is to enter the smallest and most subtle realms of cellular life, human behavior, and life on the planet.”

IONS AND BEHAVIOR

The doctor added:

“Intelligent observers have known for centuries that changes in human behavior occur when subtle atmospheric alterations take place as a result of variations in polarity and ionization.

“When certain winds begin to blow around the world, hospital admissions, suicides, and crime rates increase. Some of these changes occur every 27½ days, within lunar cycles.

“Swedish chemist and Nobel Prize winner Svante Arrhenius demonstrated that changes or alterations in atmospheric ions coincided with a considerable increase in crime every 27½ days.”

Dr. Ralph Sierra continued:

“The ‘evil wind’ was the ancient name used to describe the warm current known in Switzerland as the Föhn, which is always accompanied by extreme restlessness and an incidence of senseless crimes.

“The increase in positive ions during hot weather alters the personality of people in Libya to such an extent that, when desert winds blow, violence and crime increase.

“Throughout the Mediterranean, judges recognize the influence of the sirocco on people’s moods, to the point that lighter sentences are imposed upon individuals who commit crimes during these periods of drought and heat.”

These well-known desert and sea winds have also been associated with minor ailments. People have reported insomnia, irritability, tension, migraines, nausea, palpitations, hot flashes, sweating, chills, tremors, vertigo, swelling, difficulty breathing, and frequent bowel movements.

In addition, some older adults experience depression, apathy, and fatigue.

Dr. Irma Sierra

Ralph Sierra recommended that people spend time in the countryside because they could become charged with negative ions there, “which produce a sensation of pleasure and relief,” he explained.

On the other hand, he indicated that structures made of metal, mortar, and concrete, along with the excessive use of polyethylene, automobiles, household appliances, and the high-voltage cables found throughout cities, could congest us with positive ions, reducing a person’s capacity for action and resistance to disease.

The doctor offered a simple example of how our biomagnetism responds to everyday stimuli:

“The shower we take each day to wake ourselves up revitalizes us because the movement of falling water releases negative ions that we breathe from the air and carries the positive ions away through the drain.”

He also anticipated:

“Major commercial corporations are already developing products based on polarity: chambers and devices that will introduce negative ions into the atmosphere we breathe to improve mood, health, and even serious illnesses and injuries… and to think that the secret lies within a magnet!”

With those words, Ralph Sierra concluded.

I hope you enjoyed this interview.  Iwill now continue exploring the subject of Magnets for Happiness, which also has a second part in which I share how magnets have been part of my life.  Magnets for Happiness Part 2.

WHAT ARE NEGATIVE IONS?

Negative ions can have a positive effect on people, while positive ions can have a negative effect.

Inside an atom, we find:

  • Protons, which carry a positive charge (+).
  • Electrons, which carry a negative charge (–).
  • Neutrons, which carry no charge.

An atom from which one of its normal orbital electrons has been removed is called a positive ion.

Doesn’t “positive” (+) seem to imply that something was added?

However, an atom to which an additional electron has been added is called a negative ion.

Doesn’t “negative” (–) seem to imply that something was removed?

In our method, the North Pole is known as negative energy, while the South Pole is known as positive energy.

Positive and negative energy do not mean the same thing as a positive or negative attitude.

The negative energy found in nature is described as an energy that sustains life and seeks balance with positive energy. Positive energy also promotes life in its different forms. However, according to the research findings we have studied, it must be controlled and balanced through negative energy to support health, healing, and happiness.

As you can see, it appears to work somewhat in reverse: the terms “negative” and “positive” seem to be inverted within this context.

We can attribute part of this terminology to Benjamin Franklin during the 18th century. In his time, electrons—which carry what we call a “negative” charge—and the structure of the atom were not yet properly understood.

Nevertheless, an atom with an additional electron is still called a negative ion. We remain anchored to this 18th-century terminology, which is why we continue using the expression negative ions.

THE POLES OF A MAGNET

Magnets have two poles: the North Pole and the South Pole.

A magnet provides two different forms of energy originating from two separate poles. This concept is known as unipolar application: each pole is used separately because it is believed to produce a different effect on a living system.

On the other hand, there is bipolar application, in which both poles are believed to possess similar energy and are used simultaneously for different conditions.

Research on unipolar application has indicated greater effectiveness. Let us consider an example:

The magnets used by Dr. Sierra, Dr. Jarrot, our three children, and Health Magnetic Store & More have a North Pole on one side and a South Pole on the opposite side.

Sierra's N-1 Therapeutic Magnet

Each polarity has a particular purpose within magnetic therapy and its potential effects on the body.

We identify the polarity of the magnets used in our magnetic bands and accessories. Many jewelry pieces and magnetic products sold elsewhere do not specify which polarity is positioned toward the body.

That is why I always say: Beware of imitations.

NEGATIVE IONS, ENERGY, AND MOOD

Once negative ions enter our bloodstream, they can increase our energy and produce biochemical reactions related to mood, happiness, and well-being.

Do you remember the sensation you experienced near a waterfall, while walking along the seashore, or high in the mountains?

Thousands of negative ions are produced in these locations, and they can affect human biochemistry.

Depression and mood

The potential use of negative ions to help improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression and seasonal affective disorder, also known as winter depression or SAD, has been investigated.

How might ions influence our mood?

Some researchers have proposed that ions affect our ability to absorb and utilize oxygen. It has been suggested that negative ions in the bloodstream may accelerate the delivery of oxygen to our cells and tissues, producing a sensation comparable to what some people experience when breathing exceptionally pure air.

Columbia University conducted research involving individuals experiencing chronic depression. The results indicated that exposure to negative ionization produced considerable improvement in some participants.

There is also a patent from researchers and a recognized institution related to the use of negative ions to treat depression.

Researchers observed that a minimum exposure of 30 minutes could help certain people with depression and that, in chronic cases, longer exposure might be necessary.

In 2008, the FDA permitted the marketing of transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, for the treatment of major depression in certain adult patients. TMS is a clinical procedure that uses specialized electromagnetic equipment and is not equivalent to the application of static magnets or general-use PEMF therapy. FDA

A magnetic field applied to the brain for depression!

In 1973, Dr. Sierra created the Magnetic Memory Band. I dare to add that, because this band contains magnets across the front and back of the head, its use can be explored as an additional tool for supporting and strengthening one’s mental state.

Magnetic Memory Band Cropped

The frontal lobe participates in memory, emotions, judgment, executive functions, and behavior. For this reason, we believe that the daily use of the Magnetic Memory Band—what we call “recharging the battery”—could contribute to emotional and mental well-being.

Magnetic Memory Band

Impairment of the frontal lobe may be associated with difficulty controlling emotions, impaired judgment, problems solving situations or organizing tasks, reduced creativity, and changes in the senses of taste or smell.

The back portion of our band is designed with a strip that the red side is the positive polarity used to provide stimulating energy. This section rests primarily over the occipital lobe.

Abnormalities in the occipital lobe have also been identified in studies involving depression, anxiety, attention-deficit disorder, and cognitive dysfunction.

One extraordinary characteristic of the band is that its rear section can easily be changed to negative polarity. The band can also be rotated to position the magnets over different areas of the head.

Within our method, the frontal area is identified with North and the occipital area with South. Our traditional recommendation has been to use the band for no more than three 30-minute periods each day, with North in the front and South in the back. Afterward, both magnets may be positioned with the North Pole facing the body.

Each person is different and can observe how their body responds and whether they need more or less time.

Know yourself.

It is astonishing to discover how every part of the brain participates in controlling nearly all the body’s functions. I invite you to research and read about the lobes of the brain while learning about the Magnetic Memory Band and expanding your knowledge of our body’s magnificent capabilities.

Everything depends upon individual cells that possess their own electromagnetic charge without being connected to alternating or direct electrical current.

Negative ions can produce greater alertness, less drowsiness, and more mental energy.

Some researchers also believe that negative ions can stimulate the reticuloendothelial system, a group of defense cells that participates in our resistance to disease.

According to our experience, some of these benefits may also be obtained through the correct use of magnets.

It is important to remember that the interview with Ralph Sierra took place during the 1970s, long before many of the studies and statements presented afterward.

A MAN FAR AHEAD OF HIS TIME!

EFFECTS OF MAGNETIC FORCE AND NEGATIVE IONS ON LIVING ORGANISMS

Living organisms—including human beings, plants, and animals—are constantly surrounded by a sea of magnetic waves and fields originating from the Earth, Moon, Sun, and other bodies in our galaxy.

Our bodies contain materials with magnetic properties.

We depend upon the Earth’s magnetic fields. During the interview, Dr. Ralph Sierra explained that astronauts who remained in space for extended periods required artificial magnetic fields to preserve their health, including special insoles worn inside their boots.

As Dr. Ralph Sierra stated:

“The fact that all astronauts are exposed to the effects of the absence of terrestrial magnetism during their flights has given us the key to the secret of life.”

He therefore considered it natural that health could be restored or maintained with the assistance of a controlled magnetic field emanating from magnets.

Every cell and atom in the body can be described as a small magnetic generator. Therefore, each organ constitutes a magnetic unit with a specific vibrational frequency.

In the presence of disease, this natural oscillatory frequency may become altered. From this perspective, disease would be the result of a loss or alteration of the natural vibrational frequency, while its symptoms would be the external manifestations of this imbalance.

MAGNETS WORK TO RESTORE THE NATURAL VIBRATIONAL FREQUENCY OF THE DIFFERENT ORGANS AND THE BALANCE OF THEIR ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCES

Magnetic fields penetrate the body as though it were air. The body’s tissues allow a magnetic field to pass through them.

The human body is composed largely of water, which does not prevent magnetic fields from passing through it.

To visualize this invisible energy, remember that a strong magnet positioned on one side of the hand can easily deflect a compass needle placed on the opposite side.

MAGNETS ACT UPON THE BODY IN MANY WAYS

Magnetic therapy can help with different types of pain, including bone pain and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

It has been reported that magnets may help manage pain and have been used for chronic conditions such as inflammation, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain.

Magnets have also been reported to energize the body, support circulation, contribute to blood oxygenation, and reduce inflammation. This may support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

In 1954, Dr. Linus Pauling received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the structure of complex substances. Among his many investigations, he also studied the magnetic properties of hemoglobin and other substances related to the blood.

Pauling observed magnetic properties associated with the iron present in hemoglobin. Based upon this knowledge, it has been proposed that the proximity of a magnetic field to the wrist may influence circulation and the transfer of energy to different areas of the body.

The idea of using magnets to benefit the human body is not new.

The Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine reports that magnets formed part of the healing arts in China as early as approximately 200 B.C.

As the name suggests, magnetic bracelets operate according to the principles of magnetic therapy. This practice involves applying a magnetic field to different areas of the body, which we call biomagnetism.

Bio means life.

Wearing magnetic bracelets or other pieces of magnetic jewelry is intended to help keep the body’s magnetic field balanced.

In this way, magnetic therapy applied to different parts of the body may help reduce symptoms associated with various conditions.

People who have experienced the benefits of wearing magnetic bracelets have reported improvements related to poor circulation, insomnia, slow recovery, and bone fractures.

Their use has also been reported for stomach disorders, stress, anxiety, inflammation, arthritis, and incontinence.
